Last December we pledged a percentage of our sales to support Kesayang Ikang Papa Orphanage in Gianyar, Bali Indonesia.

Some of the kids at the orphanage.

Kesayan Ikang Papa is home to a group of mentally and physically challenged children, the majority of whom are deaf. The orphanage aims to provide the children in its care with skills that they can use when they’re ready to leave school. As Indonesia doesn’t have the same sorts of government sponsored support networks in place as many developed countries do, places like Kesayan Ikang Papa, which survives through donations, are the only hope for mentally and physically challenged children to get any sort of help in integrating.

On our recent visit to the orphanage we were

Learning to sew.

delighted to see the older children eagerly practicing their new skills on the sewing machines that were recently donated to them. They’re getting so good at it that we’ve invited them to sew our little satin jewellery bags for us. Lots of practice and pocket money for them!

One thing we noticed during our afternoon visit was that after school the children opted to lie in their beds rather than go out and play – the sun was beating down on their playground and it was too hot.

That’s when we got the idea that the orphanage can use the funds we raised to plant a garden to provide shade in the playground. Our funds will be used to plant mature trees, so the benefits for the children will be immediate.

We’ll keep you posted on the progress.

Testimonials

"Buying from Blue Turtles is always a pleasure - opening all those drawers at the Gift Fair to see the hidden treasures inside – because you know you’ll only see the good stuff. Each stone is chosen aesthetically, set with heavy silver and finished beautifully... you don’t get bumpy edges, join marks that haven’t been polished out, left over tarnished sections or stones hanging out the back of a setting. The attention to detail is obvious from the moment you look at any piece. It’s well priced, especially for the quality of the stones and the amount of silver used. You get prompt and efficient service, always with a smile!"
