Hugely inspiring poet and author, Kahlil Gibran, was born in Lebanon in 1883 and died in New York in 1931. His works show an intricate wisdom and common sense. Amongst his writings is the classic work, The Prophet, a collection of moving poems that inspire peace and a deep appreciation for the elements of life. The book presents the main character as a wise prophet who returns to his city on a ship, and is asked by the people to speak on various subjects
On the subject of marriage, Kahlil penned the above quote (we had part of this poem recited at our wedding) – it espouses the importance of maintaining our individuality in our relationship, of bringing together what we have to offer, of growing as individuals and sharing the value of that growth within the relationship. What a mature perspective on a loving relationship!
If you’re in a loving relationship, consider gifting your partner with a piece of jewellery with this quote inscribed on it. It’s available as bracelet style B-3-64 and pendant style P-13-64.
Here is the entire poem on marriage from Kahlil Gibran’s book, The Prophet:
“You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when white wings of death scatter your days.
Aye, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
Love one another but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together, yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.”
